In vitiligo, we are faced with the loss and destruction of melanocyte cells in the skin, as a result, the skin that has lost its pigment looks completely bright and white. The main cause and exact mechanism of vitiligo is not known, but the available evidence mostly indicates the involvement of some kind of autoimmune disorder in its symptoms. Among the positive evidences in confirming this hypothesis is the observation of anti-melanocyte antibodies and association with other autoimmune diseases such as thyroid autoimmune disorders with vitiligo.
Vitiligo occurs in two clinical forms.
1. Non-segmental
2. Segmental
What can be seen in the image below is the segmetal form of vitiligo, which is more common in children. Usually, this form is created in the area of the trigeminal nerve of the face and is accompanied by premature whitening of eyelashes or eyebrows. This form of vitiligo is very resistant to conventional treatments, but in terms of its stability, it is a good candidate for melanocyte cell implantation treatments.
The non-segmental form of vitiligo is more common and usually affects the extremities such as the hands and feet and around the body cavities such as the mouth and genitals. This type of vitiligo can be progressive and lead to the involvement of the entire skin. At least one third of vitiligo cases are familial, which raises the possibility of the involvement of genetic issues in the occurrence of the disease.
Like many diseases in the field of dermatology, mental and emotional issues and stress are also involved in the development and worsening of vitiligo.
